great day at school today! the way conafe teaches reading is by reading the same words over and over until the kids more or less memorize what the words look like, and then eventually will be able to translate that into their reading. it's not a method that i've studied before but i also realize that conafe has a lot of schools in mexico, and all of the kids that went through those schools must know how to read.
the kids were waiting patiently for their turn to read/memorize the words and i knew things were going to turn sour in about 5 minutes when everyone got bored except for the kid whose turn it was. i asked the kids to pick one of the words on the board, write it down, and then draw a picture to go along with it. they all did a great job following directions and completing their work - i was so proud of them!

today, some of the kids from down below (who can talk) were talking about how the boys - jose, alex, and tonio - can't talk. they weren't making fun but they kept pushing it and i was looking at alex and tonio who were just sitting there and couldn't say anything...i felt like an overprotective mother haha. i explained to the kids that they most definitely can talk - maybe not with their voices like some people, but they talk with their hands and can communicate just like everyone else. grr.

poblanos for dinner tonight! i told the guy i wanted quesadillas and he looked at me and said very slowly, "con carne?" and i said no, quesadillas. queso. no carne. then he realized i kind of spoke spanish and asked me what i wanted on it and i said everything. he smiled and said everything except meat. it was a special moment between a mexican and a wanna be mexican :)

some kids want to say hi!
