today i realized how important it is to love first and worry about the rest later. so many times i find myself in teacher mode, where my biggest concern is how fast or efficiently we can get things done. instead of asking jose how he's doing when school starts in 2 minutes and he's still in his room, with teeth to be brushed, i ask him to please hurry up and get to school. instead of sitting with sergio to talk to him and his stuffed animals, i ask him to please be quiet so that we can have school outside. instead of giving tonio a hug, i put him in his wheelchair because it's faster if i do it.

yes, school is important. yes, getting our work done is important. but what's more important is to realize that these kids, day in and day out, lead the same life, with the same people, in the same place. when they feel that extra unconditional love, they are affirmed and know that they are valued, respected, and loved. this is why i'm here.
